On Sept 18, 2026, President Trump announced a sudden ban on the media outlets CNN, Politico, and MS NOW from the White House, criticizing them and labeling them inaccurate. While a federal judge issued an order to reinstate the outlets for two weeks, this abrupt conflict ignited a larger standoff between major TV networks and the White House,

A federal district judge issued a temporary restraining order on Thursday, reasoning that President Trump suspended CNN, Politico, and MS Now’s hard passes(access to the White House) without “constitutionally adequate due process”, meaning that the White House didn’t justly follow procedures before making their decision.

After President Trump announced the ban on CNN, the four other networks in the TV pool the group of five networks CNN, NBC, Fox News, ABC, CBS ) that collaborate to provide footage of President Trump’s activities refused to air footage of President Trump in protest of the CNN ban. This decision had a big effect on the coverage of President Trump and Chinese Leader Xi Jinping’s state dinner, where many major outlets refused to air President Xi’s visit.  However, the TV pool began to work out an interim plan to reinstate media coverage with the four other outlets, but ultimately, this conflict calls into question if access to the President is a privilege or a right.
